Augustin and Tinoco Cruz are part of a family of wood carvers from Oaxaca Mexico.
The carvings are done with machetes and kitchen and pocket knives. The wood comes from the copal tree (Bursera cuneata). When green, copal is soft and easily workable and is sanded to a smooth porcelain-like finish which does absorb much paint. Copal wood is very susceptible to bugs, so to prevent the bugs from destroying a carving the wood is put in the freezer for a week wrapped in a plastic bag. Once carved and sanded the piece is painted with acrylic paints. Aniline paints were used to paint the carvings but artists stopped using them because they faded.
